Description
Weather and ocean data files open as a wall of numbers, and seeing what a temperature field actually looks like usually means writing a plotting script first. Panoply is a free tool from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies: drop in a NetCDF, HDF or GRIB file and a few clicks later you have a map-projected color plot, contour or line chart.
Global gridded data without writing code: switch projections, adjust the color scale and overlay several datasets from the interface. It is a Java program that runs straight from the unpacked folder, needs Java 9 or newer, and works on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Many formats:reads NetCDF, HDF, GRIB and GEMPACK data.
Maps and sections:lat/lon grids take map projections, and vertical sections and time series are supported.
Adjustable color scales:load color tables or set the range by hand, with control over legends and borders.
Export:save plots as images or animations for papers and reports.
