Description
Java objects need to go to disk or across the network, the built-in serialization is slow and bulky, and every class has to implement Serializable. Kryo takes another route: it writes objects straight to compact binary, with no interface to add and no hand-written read and write code.
The project sums itself up as fast, efficient and automatic. It serializes the whole object graph, carrying nested objects, collections and references, and the structure comes back as it was. Beyond serialization it can also deep and shallow copy objects in memory. The README discusses tuning such as unsafe buffers and variable-length integer encoding, so you can trade size against speed yourself. It is a library with no interface, pulled in as a Maven dependency; this entry is 5.7.0.
Automatic serialization:No Serializable to implement and no read or write logic to write by hand.
Compact binary:Small output and quick reads and writes.
Object graph support:Handles nested objects and the references between them.
Swappable serializers:Field serializers and others can be replaced or customized per type.
Deep and shallow copy:Copies objects in memory without a serialize-and-read round trip.
Variable-length encoding:Optional varint and varlong encoding shrinks data and can be turned off for chosen fields.
