Gajim

Gajim

Open Source XMPP Chat Client

Description

You want out of a chat app that one company controls, but you don't want to hand over another phone number. Gajim speaks the open XMPP protocol: pick any server, register without an email or phone number, and message anyone on any XMPP server instead of being locked into one platform.

The layout is the familiar conversation list on the left and chat on the right. Chats and group chats can be sorted into separate workspaces, work and personal accounts run side by side without mixing, and dark mode keeps late-night conversations easy on the eyes. It is free and open source.

Features

Multiple accounts: keep personal and work accounts online at once, each managed separately, and decide how much status and read-receipt detail you share.

Workspaces: file conversations and group chats under projects so you stop scrolling one long list.

Messaging: reactions, voice messages, pinned chats and file sending, with typing indicators from the other side.

Plugins: community-maintained plugins install on demand to fill in features that are missing.

Dark mode: follows the system appearance so long chats at night stay comfortable.
