Description
You have a few hundred megabytes of XML and want a handful of records that match a condition. A text editor chokes on it, and loading it into a relational database means designing tables first. BaseX stores the XML as it is and lets you query it with XQuery, no schema step, and the query plan shows which index it used and how it rewrote your expression.
It comes with a GUI: a file tree on the left, an XQuery editor with syntax highlighting in the middle, run info and timings on the right, and results you can view as text, a scatter plot or a tree map. When needed it also runs as a server that other programs reach over REST and HTTP, or you can script it from the command line. It is written in Java, so with Java installed it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, under a BSD license.
XML database: documents are indexed on load, so queries stay quick on large files.
XQuery editor: syntax highlighting and run-as-you-type, with the optimized query and timing listed after each run.
Visualization: switch results between text, table, scatter plot and tree map views without another tool.
Server mode: REST and HTTP services, with local or remote login for administration.
Several packages: a Windows installer, a cross-platform JAR and a ZIP.
