Description
An SQLite file sitting on a phone or computer can be read by anyone who gets hold of it, so protecting user data means handling encryption yourself. SQLCipher is a standalone fork of SQLite that adds 256 bit AES full database encryption: pages are encrypted before they are written and decrypted when read, so no plaintext reaches the disk. Its API stays close to SQLite, so adoption is cheap, and its makers say thousands of applications use it. The community edition is open source under BSD-3-Clause, with commercial editions for enterprises.
Transparent encryption: pages are encrypted before writing and decrypted on read, with little change to app code.
AES-256 and PBKDF2: 256 bit AES and key derivation built on OpenSSL.
Tamper resistant: per page integrity checks detect modified data.
Cross platform, zero configuration: works in desktop, mobile and server apps.
Commercial and enterprise editions: extra features and support, while the community edition is free for open source.
