Textadept

Textadept

Minimal Scriptable Text Editor

Description

Editors for code tend to be either bloated enough that startup takes seconds, or so bare they cannot even split a window. Textadept sits in between: a small C and Lua core that runs straight from a folder, touches nothing in the registry, and fits on a USB stick as a whole development setup.

The interface stays out of the way, a menu and tabs, yet nearly every feature is written in Lua. Changing a shortcut, adding a language or swapping the completion logic means editing a script rather than waiting for a plugin store. The same code runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and there is a terminal build too.

Features

Portable: unzip and run, no registry entries, and the same setup follows you to another PC.

Split views: divide a window horizontally or vertically and open one file in several views side by side.

Coding aids: syntax highlighting, code folding, brace matching, snippets, autocompletion and bookmarks.

Search and replace: incremental search, regex, whole-word matching and find in files.

Scriptable in Lua: language modules, themes and key bindings are Lua, and changes take effect right away.
