Description
A beginner installs the Python interpreter, then has to pick an editor, set environment variables and make sense of virtual environments, and many give up before writing a first line. Thonny bundles Python in its installer, so it works right after install with no extra setup.
It is a Python IDE made for learners and teachers, and its debugger stands out: when you step through code, how each expression is evaluated is shown right in the editor, and each function call gets its own window of variables, making recursion and scope easy to see.
Python included:The installer ships with Python, so no environment setup is needed.
Step-by-step debugging:Step through code and watch expression evaluation and variable changes inline.
Variables view:Lists current variables and values live, with a separate window for each function call.
Package manager:Install third-party libraries from a GUI instead of typing pip commands.
Portable build:Besides the installer, the project offers a ZIP version that needs no installation.
Open source:The code is on GitHub, maintained by the University of Tartu in Estonia.
