Open-source digital FPV transmission system

Description

Everyone in FPV is stuck on the same triangle: range, image quality, latency — hard to get all three. Analog transmission is low-latency but blurry and prone to interference; DJI’s digital system is crisp but a closed ecosystem you cannot really tinker with.

OpenHD offers a third path: ordinary Wi-Fi hardware running a purpose-built broadcast scheme (wifibroadcast) that skips the usual Wi-Fi connection handshake for one-way broadcasting, optimised for low-latency, long-range digital transmission — the project cites 50+ km with well-tuned setups. It is a fully open-source digital FPV system.

Beyond HD video, it carries telemetry, audio and RC control over the same link (MAVLink), with the QOpenHD ground station showing the feed and an OSD (flight-data overlay) whose layout you can customise. It runs on platforms like the Raspberry Pi, with compatibility lists for cameras and Wi-Fi adapters.

This is not a plug-and-play product but an open-source scheme for hardware tinkerers: assemble your own air and ground units, flash the image, tune the parameters. GPL-3.0, 2.6k stars — worth a look if you like FPV and hardware DIY.
