When a three- or four-year-old first sits at a computer, most software greets them with ads or baffling buttons. A few random clicks later they're in another window and a parent has to hover nearby to rescue things.
The Enchanted Crayon is a digital colouring book made for children 3 and up. It opens straight to a full-screen colouring page: pick an animal drawing with the arrows, then tap a colour in the palette and tap the picture to fill it. It's simple enough for a child to use alone, and it teaches mouse skills and making choices along the way.
Parents decide which features children can reach, such as hiding the exit button or disabling printing so the program doesn't get closed by accident or run through a stack of paper. It works with a mouse, touchpad or Xbox controller, and help is spoken aloud so children who can't read yet can still use it.
12 animal drawings: different difficulty levels, so you can pick pictures with fewer, larger areas for younger children.
Tap to colour: a full palette where one tap picks a colour and another fills an area, no careful outlining needed.
Auto-save: each drawing keeps its colours, ready to continue next time.
