Description
A key seems to drop characters sometimes, but it types fine in another window — is the switch dying, is it n-key rollover, or is the IME eating it? Guessing gets you nowhere. Keyboard Test Utility draws the whole keyboard on screen and lights up whatever you press, so one pass tells you which key genuinely sends nothing. Run it on a second-hand keyboard the moment it arrives and you have an answer in ten seconds.
Keys you already pressed stay marked in a lighter shade, which catches the fleeting problems too — chatter, double-fires, dropped characters. It is a single 312 KB executable: double-click to run, no registry entries, no leftovers, delete it when done.
Live key map: the on-screen keyboard highlights in step with the physical one, stays lit while held and clears on release, making stuck and repeating keys obvious.
Press history: previously pressed keys keep a distinct shade instead of vanishing, so a run of combinations can be reviewed afterwards. Reset clears the board.
Scan codes and virtual key codes: VK Code, Scan Code and key state show at the bottom in real time — far more useful than a description when debugging remapping tools, controller mappings or dead media keys.
Multiple layouts: ANSI, ISO and other layouts are built in, so a compact laptop keyboard still lines up with what is drawn on screen.
