The old QuickTime player couldn't open some video formats, always saying unsupported. Perian was the all-in-one patch: a component that adds many media formats to QuickTime, once installed QuickTime plays AVI, FLV, DivX and more directly without transcoding, a classic component for completing video format support on Mac of that era.
