Media Player Codec Pack

Media Player Codec Pack

Everyday codec pack for Windows

Description

A downloaded MKV plays sound with no picture in Windows Media Player, or the player just asks for a codec, and then you go searching for what to install and hope it does not clash with something else. The Standard edition of Media Player Codec Pack is made for that moment: install it once and Windows Media Player and DirectShow based players can open the common video and audio formats. The official site calls it the recommended edition for most desktop and laptop users.

The installer checks your CPU and graphics card first, recognising NVIDIA, AMD/ATI and Intel graphics, and then offers suitable decoding and acceleration options. Hardware acceleration is optional, and formats still decode in software when the GPU cannot help. It also ships test and tuning utilities, so you do not have to guess whether this PC can handle 4K. It is free, needs no registration, and supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1 and 7.

Features

Common formats in one go: the official list includes MKV, MP4, AVI, WEBM, HEVC, H.264, AAC, AC3, DTS, FLAC and OGG, so a library of old and new files plays together

Easy or detailed install: pick Easy Installation if you are unsure, or Detailed Installation to choose components and settings yourself, both in the same installer

Defaults based on your hardware: the detailed install detects CPU threads and the graphics card to recommend a decoding method, and falls back to software decoding when the GPU cannot help, at a speed set by the CPU

Video compatibility tester: a built in tool runs an HD or 4K check so you can see whether the machine can play it

Power tuner: a Power Tuner adjusts power related settings, handy for long playback sessions such as an HTPC

One place for settings: the settings panel has entries for GPU and video settings, sound and audio settings and detailed codec settings, which open the options for filters such as LAV

Lossless audio: every edition includes CW-Lossless, CW-Lossy, CW-MOD and CW-Surround, with DSD and HDCD playback through CW-Lossless
