Description
You double-click an mkv and the Movies and TV app says the format is not supported. You open a folder of video files and every one of them is a blank white icon, so you cannot tell them apart. Shark007 Codecs fills in the missing half: once it is in place the built-in player, older DirectShow players and Explorer thumbnails all go through the same set of decoders, so no single format needs its own dedicated player any more.
This is not one of the old codec packs that scatters filters across the system and can never be fully removed. The whole thing is portable — unpack it wherever you like and run it there — and configuration lives in one settings application with Configure, Misc, Audio, AVI WMV and Swap tabs, where each piece can be switched off individually, so when something misbehaves you know exactly where to undo it.
LAV Filters for decoding and splitting: video decoding and container splitting are handled by LAV, covering H.264, HEVC, AV1 and VP9 alongside mkv, ts and m2ts, and the settings app opens LAV's own panel so hardware decoding can be tuned directly.
Icaros for thumbnails and properties: Explorer shows real frame thumbnails for video files and fills in duration, resolution and codec columns in details view, so sorting a library does not mean opening each file.
Subtitle rendering: embedded and external subtitles both display, with ASS and SSA styling rendered as authored, so subtitles are not a reason to switch players.
Standard and Advanced editions: Standard covers everyday playback, and one button unlocks the Advanced edition with the fine-grained settings, so simple needs are not met with a screen full of parameters.
Portable and self-updating: copy the folder anywhere and it runs, and it checks and updates its own components rather than leaving you to watch the site for releases.
Windows Defender compatibility: the package includes an Allow.exe that you run at the target location before unpacking the main folder, which keeps Defender from quarantining the codec components.
