FMOD Studio

Adaptive audio for games

Description

Game music hard-coded as one loop means the boss fight still plays your exploration theme, and the footstep is the same sample every time until it grates. Making sound react to game state usually means programmers wiring up track-switching logic by hand, and every audio tweak means another build.

FMOD Studio hands that job to the sound designer. You lay out layered tracks on a timeline and drive them with parameter knobs: parameter-driven adaptive audio. Push a progress parameter from 0 to 1 and the music moves to its next section, with transition points and fades drawn right on the track. Footsteps and pickup sounds can vary randomly too, so you stop stuffing twenty files into the project.

Features

Event editor: every in-game event gets its own event with multiple tracks, trigger regions and transition markers, so music can hand off by beat or by time without a seam.

Mixer: group effects, music and UI sounds like a mixing desk, hang reverb returns on them, shape each bus with a multiband EQ, and save snapshots to switch between scenes.

Live update: connect to the running game and change parameters while it plays, then save once it sounds right instead of restarting after every edit.

Profiler: record the audio load of a live session, see which events eat CPU and which voices get stolen, and trim the cost before release.

Engine integration: official Unity and Unreal plugins plus a C++ API, so the designer's project can be handed straight to the programmers.
