Description
In indie games, effects are where things stall: bought asset packs never match your style, and drawing your own fire, explosions and spells takes forever. pixelfx writes effects as code: 244 pixel art effects, each a small piece of JavaScript, covering fire, explosions, ice, lightning, weather, UI feedback, pickups and critters. Play, recolor and mirror them in the web gallery, drop them into a browser game, or export sprite sheets for any engine.
Effects involving a character are acted out with wind up, release, hit freeze and recovery, with targets taking the hit, and twelve whole moves chain effects into full attacks. The repo also ships a Claude Code skill that makes new effects the way a picky pixel artist would: draft, render, look, refine. The method comes from Hugo Duprez's article, and the code is MIT licensed.
Live gallery: browse 21 categories from fire and explosions to water, ice, lightning, sci-fi, melee and impacts; play, recolor and mirror.
Browser game integration: no dependencies, works with Canvas, Phaser, PixiJS, Kaplay and three.js, drawing at your game resolution via createFx.
Sprite sheet export: export effects as sprite sheets for Unity, Godot and other engines.
Whole moves: twelve full actions chaining effects from wind up to recovery.
Claude Code skill: makes new effects through a draft, render, look, refine loop.
Code as asset: every effect is a file under src/fx you can read, edit and combine.
