ESP32-Bit-Pirate

ESP32-Bit-Pirate

ESP32 as a hardware swiss army knife

Description

You pick up a board you have never seen and want to know which chip sits on the I2C bus or what the UART is spitting out. The usual answer is a logic analyzer, a USB-serial adapter and a nest of jumper wires, and your desk is a mess within minutes.

ESP32 Bit Pirate is open-source firmware that turns an ordinary ESP32 into a multi-protocol debugging and analysis tool, inspired by the legendary Bus Pirate. Connect over USB serial or the web terminal in your browser, type mode i2c and then scan, and every address on the bus is listed.

The project site has a web flasher and an online terminal, so you do not need to set up any toolchain. The download link points to GitHub Releases, which holds a firmware file for each supported board.

Features

Wired buses: I2C, SPI, UART, 1-Wire, 2-Wire, 3-Wire, CAN and JTAG/SWD each have a mode, with scanning, EEPROM and flash read and write, and bus sniffing.

Wireless protocols: Bluetooth BLE, Wi-Fi, Sub-GHz, LoRa, RFID and RF24 can be scanned, sniffed or used to send and receive, and there is FM broadcast analysis too.

Web terminal: connect to the board straight from the browser over Web Serial, with no drivers or client to install, and it behaves like a normal serial terminal.

Auto detection: baud rate detection removes the trial and error.

Infrared and USB: record and send infrared, act as a universal remote, or emulate HID and read and write storage over USB.

Web flasher: pick your board on the site and flash it in one click.
