Description
Any emulator will get Super Mario running. The moment you want to look under the hood, though, such as what a certain address holds, how a screen is assembled from tiles, or how to record a run that replays perfectly, most of them fall short. FCEUX is the NES / Famicom emulator built for exactly that crowd.
It does more than play. It ships with a full set of debugging tools: a disassembly debugger with breakpoints and single-stepping, a hex editor that edits memory directly, and PPU and nametable viewers that lay out how the picture is built from tiles. Speedrunners and ROM translators lean on these the most.
Debugger: set breakpoints and single-step to watch what each CPU instruction does.
Memory and graphics viewers: hex editor, PPU viewer and nametable viewer, so values and tiles can be inspected and changed in one window.
Cheat search: filter memory addresses by how a value changes and track down where lives or coins are stored yourself.
Movie recording and TAS: record your input, replay it frame by frame, and combine it with Lua scripting and TAS tools for tool-assisted runs.
Runs without installing: the download is a 64-bit zip; unpack it and launch.
