Python

Python

Readable general-purpose programming language

Description

You want to batch-process files, scrape some data or write a small script without reading a grammar book first. Python's syntax is close to pseudocode, so a few lines get an idea running, and the interactive interpreter returns a result the moment you type a line, which keeps trial and error cheap.

It is not only a beginner language: web backends, data analysis, machine learning and ops automation all run on it, the standard library covers files, networking, regex, databases and dates, and pip installs hundreds of thousands of third-party packages. On Windows, download the installer from the official site and tick Add to PATH to use it from the command line. It is free and open source, with several release branches maintained at once; pick the latest stable one for new projects.

Features

Interactive interpreter:Type expressions line by line at the prompt and get answers immediately, handy for math and for poking at APIs.

Readable syntax:Indentation marks blocks, with no heavy brackets or semicolons, so other people's code is easy to follow.

Rich standard library:Ready-made modules for files, networking, regex, dates, databases and compression.

pip package manager:Install third-party libraries in one command and isolate project dependencies with virtual environments.

IDLE editor:A simple bundled environment to write a script and run it right away.

Cross-platform:The same code runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
