Description
A few years of coins and banknotes look fine in an album until you have to answer whether you already own that 2004 Greek 2 euro, or which year the better-condition one came from and what it cost — at which point you are turning pages. A spreadsheet cannot hold obverse and reverse photographs. OpenNumismat exists for exactly this: every piece gets images of both faces plus dozens of specialist fields — denomination, currency, issuing country, year, mint and mint mark, material, weight, diameter, grade, source and price, all stored as structured data.
It is not a generic collection manager wearing a coin theme. The fields follow numismatic practice: obverse and reverse stored separately, mintage figures and catalog numbers recorded, condition entered on the usual grading scales. Everything lives in a local SQLite file, so a backup is a file copy and the inventory never goes to an online service. Free and open source on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Coin-specific fields: denomination, currency, country, year, mint and mint mark, material, weight, diameter, edge, mintage, catalog number and grade are all first-class rather than shoehorned into a generic form.
Obverse and reverse images: each piece stores front, back and edge photographs at full size with thumbnails, so comparing pieces happens in the list instead of in the drawer.
Purchase and sale records: price paid, date, source, sale price and buyer are tracked, and combined with the statistics they show what the collection has cost and how it has moved.
Multiple views and statistics: switch between list, grouped tree and image views, and chart the collection by country, year or material to see its distribution and gaps.
Predefined catalogs: reference catalogs organized by country or series can be imported as templates, so filling in missing years works from a checklist rather than from nothing.
Local SQLite storage: the whole collection is one database file, which makes backup, migration and keeping several separate collections a matter of copying files.
Export and sharing: collections export to HTML pages, CSV and other formats for sending an inventory to someone else or archiving it.
Localized and cross-platform: the interface ships in many languages, with free open-source builds for Windows, macOS and Linux.
