HEC-RAS

HEC-RAS

River Hydraulics and Flood Modeling

Description

If a dam upstream failed, how fast would the water reach downstream, which towns would flood and how deep would it get? Rough estimates will not do, you need a model. HEC-RAS is the free hydraulic analysis software from the US Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center, used for flood planning, bridge and culvert design and channel work.

It runs one-dimensional steady and unsteady flow, two-dimensional floodplain inundation, and extreme cases like dam breaks and levee breaches. Results can be overlaid on satellite maps in the built-in RAS Mapper to see velocity, depth and flood extent. Results depend on the terrain and boundary data you supply and are not a guarantee of real-world behaviour.

Features

Flow and sediment: Water surface profiles, 1D and 2D unsteady flow, sediment transport and water quality analysis.

Extreme events: Dam breaks, levee breaches, and hydraulics of bridges, culverts and other structures.

RAS Mapper: Overlay depth, velocity and inundation boundaries on terrain and satellite imagery, with 3D views.

Project management: Plans, geometry and flow data are kept separate so you can compare several scenarios on the same river.

Free from the source: Provided free by the Corps of Engineers. The installer is large, so get it from the official download page.
