Description
You reorganize a photo library, rename a pile of files and move folders around, then sync to an external drive, and most tools delete the old copies and recopy everything, which means another overnight wait for a few hundred GB. Echosync only moves what really changed: it recognizes renamed and moved files and applies the same change on the destination instead of deleting and copying again.
Sync is one way, from source to destination, and the source is never modified, so it can even be read only. You can compare first and see in a list what will be added, overwritten or deleted before pressing Sync. A portable build runs straight from the external drive or USB stick, so your sync profiles travel with it. It is a one person project, free, with no ads on its site and funded by donations. It needs Windows 10 64-bit or later.
Differential sync: copies only what changed since the last run, and partial sync is possible, such as copying new files while leaving modified ones alone
Rename and move detection: a reorganized photo or asset library does not trigger a mass delete and recopy on the destination
Compare before sync: lists every difference between source and destination with sizes and modified dates so you can check before running
Sync action switches: five toggles for new, deleted, newer, older and moved or renamed items, combined as needed, and with deletion on a file removed from the source is removed from the destination too
Folder filters: include or exclude files and subfolders with wildcard rules, so temp files and cache folders are skipped
Locked files and long paths: with administrator rights it uses Volume Shadow Copy to copy files in use, and it handles paths beyond 255 characters and symbolic links
Echocli command line: a command line program ships along on Windows and Linux, for scheduled backups through the Windows Task Scheduler
Languages and install options: the interface includes Chinese, with an MSI installer, a portable archive and winget support
