Description
You want to run your own mail server without being locked into a fixed flow: an incoming message should pass a business check first, then be routed by your own rules, and off-the-shelf mail software will not let you step in. Apache James is a mail server written in pure Java where every step of mail processing can be changed.
Receiving, sending and fetching are built as replaceable components, so you can plug your own mail handling logic into the pipeline and have business code fire the moment a message arrives. If you want email to be an entry point into your system and not just an inbox, this is a ready foundation.
SMTP and POP3: Sending, delivery and user retrieval, the basics of any mail server.
NNTP news service: Also includes a news service for storing and reading messages from news servers.
FetchMail: Pulls mail from other POP3 mailboxes and feeds it into the local mail queue.
Custom mail processing: The processing pipeline can be rearranged, and your own handlers can be attached to it.
Highly configurable: Modules combine through libraries, so processing is flexible and not a black box.
Cross-platform: Pure Java: with a Java runtime it runs anywhere, just download, unzip and start.
