Secure Eraser

Secure Eraser

Multi-standard file shredder and drive wiper

Description

Selling an old PC or handing a drive to someone is stressful when you know a deleted file can come straight back with a recovery tool. Emptying the Recycle Bin or formatting only wipes the directory entry, the data itself is still sitting on the disk. Secure Eraser does something different: it overwrites the actual location again and again until the original content cannot be read back.

It puts five overwrite standards in one dropdown: random-value overwrite, US DoD 5220.22-M E and ECE, the German industrial standard BSI-VSITR, and the Peter Gutmann method, all in line with the NIST SP 800-88 guidance. You pick a level by how sensitive the data is, with no need to study which algorithm is harsher. Every erase can be logged, so when you need to show that data was destroyed you can open the report. This is the portable build, which unpacks and runs without installing anything. There is a free Standard Edition for personal use, and the Professional Edition costs $29.90.
