Rogue base stations can impersonate carriers to intercept messages or locate phones, invisible to ordinary users. CellGuard, a research project from SEEMOO lab at TU Darmstadt, is an iOS app that observes baseband packets and flags suspicious activity hinting at rogue base stations.
It helps study how cellular networks are operated and possibly surveilled, uncovering attacks on iPhones.
