Description
Blackmagic Converter Utility is the configuration tool for Blackmagic Design’s video converter hardware. It does not process video itself; it connects over USB to a box such as a Mini Converter and turns settings that would otherwise mean flipping DIP switches into a few clicks on a computer.
The converters work as soon as they are plugged in, but changing specific behaviour — which audio channels are used, how SDI levels are set, whether an overlay is applied, which 3G-SDI mapping applies — is what this tool is for. It also handles firmware updates when Blackmagic ships a new version. It is only of use to someone who owns the matching hardware; without a device there is nothing for it to do.
Settings: A window replaces the physical switches on the device, so audio channels, video levels and output formats are changed on screen and written back to the unit.
Firmware updates: It reads the firmware version of a connected device and flashes a newer one when needed, which is how fixes and new capabilities arrive.
Multiple devices: With several converters attached it identifies and configures each separately, so nothing has to be unplugged in between.
Cross-platform: Windows and macOS versions exist, distributed together by product line on the vendor’s support site.
