Apple's built-in dictation leaves out punctuation and ignores context, so you end up fixing every sentence afterwards. The good alternatives like Wispr Flow charge a monthly fee and send your voice to the cloud.
YapToText was built by someone who can't type and dictates everything, including its own README. Tap Right Command in any app, talk, tap again, and your words land at the cursor with punctuation and capitalization already fixed. Speech runs on Whisper Large v3 Turbo and the cleanup model ships inside the app, so it works offline from the first launch: no account, no subscription, no word cap.
Accessibility comes first. One key runs everything, it works alongside VoiceOver and Voice Control, and it can fully replace a keyboard. It's GPL-3.0, so you can check every privacy claim in the code instead of taking it on trust. It needs an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 14 or later, and it's also free on the Mac App Store.

Auto mode: an email comes out formatted as an email, a quick message stays casual, and adding "make that formal" or "as a bullet list" at the end is followed. Press 1 to 9 mid-dictation to switch modes yourself.
Hears you through noise: background noise is stripped, quiet voices are lifted against the room level, and decoding digs deeper when it's loud. Whispering next to a running 3D printer still comes out clean, and Bluetooth hearing aids keep full sound quality.
