One password reused across a dozen sites means one breach takes all twelve down — but a unique random string per site is impossible to memorise. LastPass moves the problem into the browser: remember one master password and let the extension generate and fill the rest. Open a login page and the credentials are already in the fields.
Encryption and decryption happen locally; the master password itself never leaves the machine, and the server holds only ciphertext, so a server-side incident yields data nobody can open.
