MetaClean

MetaClean

Local file privacy cleaner

Description

Photos carry GPS coordinates, Word documents keep your name, employer and the tracked changes you thought were gone, PDFs hold metadata from earlier drafts, and text copied out of an LLM can hide invisible Unicode. Who cleans all that before you hit send? MetaClean does exactly one job: scan and strip private traces locally, with your files never leaving the machine.

It needs no ExifTool, Python or Perl, just one executable. The flow is deliberately cautious: a read-only scan reports what it found per file, and nothing is written until you confirm. The default output is a .cleaned copy instead of an overwrite, originals are backed up before replacement, and formats that cannot be cleaned safely are rejected rather than silently passed through.

Features

Multi-format cleaning: covers images, Office documents, PDFs and text, removing EXIF, GPS, author info, tracked changes and invisible characters.

Scan before you clean: scanning is read-only and reports per file, and writes happen only after you confirm.

Safe writes: defaults to a .cleaned copy, backs up the original before replacing it, and writes atomically.

Fully offline: no upload API, telemetry or cloud processing; the optional update check can be turned off.

Three platforms: Windows installers and portable ZIPs, macOS dmg for Apple Silicon and Intel, Linux deb, rpm and AppImage.
