With a few thousand local tracks, finding one song takes longer than searching a streaming service. The built-in player does not know APE or DSD, and the artwork and tags are a mess. A player that just plays music — no recommendations, no popups — is a surprisingly short list.
AIMP is the veteran on it, still updated after two decades. It does local music and nothing else: a library organised by artist, album and genre, a tag editor that works in bulk, and a duplicate finder. Format support runs from MP3 and FLAC through APE, WavPack, DSD and Opus, with an 18-band equaliser, several effects and VST plugin support. The interface is skinnable with hundreds of official skins. Free, ad-free, on Windows, Linux and Android.
